What do You do if You’re Involved in a Hit-and-Run or Uninsured Driver Accident?

Hit-and-run incidents and accidents involving uninsured drivers unfortunately occur very frequently for Maryland residents. We routinely represent clients that are struck by drivers do not possess a valid insurance policy or who flee the scene of the accident. This situation can be frustrating for the victim who has been hurt due to the carelessness of others. However, just because you have been hurt in a hit-and-run accident or injured by an uninsured driver, doesn’t mean you have no recourse. If you find yourself facing this scenario, here are some tips of what you can do to mitigate your losses or put yourself in a better position to recover from your losses.

Call the Police: First and foremost, if you’re involved in a hit-and-run accident, call the police immediately. You want to ensure you have official documentation of the accident and proof that the other driver fled the scene. This documentation will make the process easier, and in many uninsured motorist claims, a Police Report is required. If possible, try to obtain the tag number for the other vehicle. In most instances, your insurance company will be able to locate insurance for that vehicle. Additionally, notify your own insurance company that you were involved in a hit-and-run accident. This ensures they’re aware of the accident in case you need to file a claim under your Uninsured Motorist coverage. The same steps apply if the at-fault-driver did not have valid insurance at the time of the accident.

Photograph the Scene If Possible: Taking photos of the scene and the damage to your vehicle is crucial. These photos serve as valuable evidence. If there were witnesses to the accident, obtain their information and ask if they are willing to provide statements to the insurance company if needed. Independent witnesses can significantly strengthen your case. If you are too injured to do this, see if you can get someone, a friend or a family member, to assist you in preserving this critical evidence.

Review your Coverage: For all Uninsured Motorist claims, you will most likely be required to pay a deductible for auto repairs. While this can be extremely frustrating, it’s important to note the deductible will usually be less than your standard deductible and you will be reimbursed if insurance information of the other driver is located later.

Seek Legal Advice: It is important to understand that the accident was not your fault and that this is just one part of the process to get you the help that you need. If you have any doubts or questions, or need clarification on any aspect of your accident, our firm is always here to help.

Use Your Uninsured Motorist Coverage: Whether you’re injured or not, your insurance includes Uninsured Motorist coverage for situations like these. Our firm has experience in handling similar cases and will help you navigate the process.
