Taxi Cabs And Accidents In Maryland; What You Need To Know!
Taxi Cabs are not required to have the same insurance coverage as other vehicles. According to Md. Code Ann., Ins. § 19-501 “Motor Vehicle Insurance- Primary Coverage,” Taxi Cabs are excluded from the primary coverage mandates for motor vehicles. Likewise, claims for taxi cab drivers are handled differently than other claims. Our office has handled many cases for taxi cab drivers in Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia.
Unlike most other vehicles, taxis similarly do not carry no-fault medical coverage. However, sometimes taxi cab drivers or passengers are able to make claims under their personal policies for no-fault medical coverage (Nasseri v. Geico Gen. Ins. Co., 390 Md. 188, 888 A.2d 284 (2005)). Our office has plenty of experience in determining which insurance policies are available to our clients. We work to ensure that our clients are taking advantage of all of the benefits to which they are entitled. No-fault medical coverage is not a necessity. Many of our taxi cab driver clients do not have any no-fault medical coverage available to them. Regardless of the client’s insurance coverage, our office fights to secure abundant compensation from the at-fault insurance company, including payment for all medical treatment, lost wages, expenses, and pain and suffering.
Sometimes taxi cab drivers are involved in hit-and-run accidents or accidents where the at-fault party may be uninsured. This can be a complicated situation. When other motor vehicles are involved in these kinds of accidents, they carry insurance coverage on their vehicles which will step in to provide compensation. Unfortunately, taxi cabs do not carry this coverage. It is absolutely vital that taxi cab drivers obtain insurance information for the at-fault vehicle involved in the accident. We encourage our clients to always file a police report and obtain witness information. If you are unsure about the at-fault vehicle’s insurance or think they may be uninsured, our office can conduct an investigation into whether there may be any insurance available to you.
