Should I See a Doctor After a Car Accident Even If I Am Not Hurt?

Written by Bob Katz Law reviewed by Timothy J. Capurso

Car Accidents

Many accident victims walk away from a collision believing they escaped unharmed simply because they don’t feel pain right away. This false sense of security can have serious consequences for both your health and any future legal claim. Should I see a doctor after a car accident, even if I feel okay?  We believe the answer is yes. The reason is, sometimes, adrenaline and cortisol rise in the brain after an accident and these fight or flight mechanisms can suppress pain receptors in the body, which mask injuries such as whiplash or internal bleeding that may show up later.

Doctor with a patient Receiving prompt medical attention is crucial for your health in order to effectively rule out any serious complications. Additionally, it is helpful from a legal perspective because it creates a formal record of the accident itself, and if there are injuries, they will be documented as evidence. For emergencies, go to the ER; for less severe injuries, an urgent care center or a primary care physician is a good option. If it turns out you have an injury, then medical documentation of this fact becomes critical evidence if you later need to pursue legal action.. At Bob Katz Law, we sometimes guide clients who didn’t realize they were injured until days after their accident, when insurance companies had already begun questioning the connection between the crash and their symptoms.

Additionally, it is a good idea to avoid giving recorded statements to the adverse insurance carrier, immediately after the accident for the same reason as above. For example, if you feel no immediate pain, you may report to the insurance carrier that you were, “not injured.” If pain then starts a day after you’ve given this statement, it may not matter to the insurance carrier. They might later use your statement, indicating that you were not injured, against you as impeachment evidence if your case has to go to court.

Common Car Accident Injuries

Some injuries take time to reveal themselves, and even a minor fender bender can cause soft tissue damage or hidden trauma.

Some of the common injuries may include:

  • Whiplash and neck strain.
  • Concussions or mild traumatic brain injuries (TBI).
  • Back and spinal cord injuries.
  • Internal bleeding or organ bruising.
  • Soft tissue injuries, including sprains or muscle tears.
  • Psychological injuries such as anxiety or post-traumatic stress.

Each of these conditions can worsen without treatment, which is why documenting them early makes a difference both medically and legally. In many of these cases, patients who asked themselves Should I see a doctor after a car accident discovered later that early treatment prevented long-term complications.

When Should I See a Doctor After a Car Accident?

Immediate action (within 24-48 hours) is a good idea, even if you think you feel okay. We recommend seeking medical attention within 24 to 48 hours to document any potential hidden injuries before they worsen. Also, go to the emergency room if you start to experience severe pain, loss of consciousness, heavy bleeding, or life-threatening injuries. Select an urgent care center for non-life-threatening issues, such as minor sprains or cuts. Remember to document your injuries. The bottom line here is that getting checked out creates a record that proves your injuries were caused by the accident, which can be important for your legal or insurance claim, as well as rules out serious problems, which can be complicated by delays in diagnosis.

What Happens When the ER Treats You After a Maryland Car Accident?

At a Maryland emergency room, staff will assess your vital signs, ask about symptoms, and may order X-rays, CT scans, or blood tests depending on the doctor’s assessment of your complaints. Hospitals create detailed medical records that document your visit, which serve as crucial evidence if you later pursue a personal injury claim.

You will likely be asked to describe how the accident occurred. Try to be factual and clear, avoiding speculation. Hospitals typically forward your medical report to your primary care provider to ensure continuity of care.

Which Injuries Require a Visit to the Emergency Room in Maryland?

Use an emergency department when symptoms suggest a serious medical condition. These may include:

  • Chest or abdominal pain.
  • Uncontrolled bleeding.
  • Head injury or loss of consciousness.
  • Sudden weakness or confusion.
  • Difficulty breathing or severe dizziness.
  • Broken bones or significant pain

According to the Maryland Insurance Administration, emergency rooms are intended for true emergencies, while urgent care centers, sometimes referred to as Quick Care or Express Care, can treat less severe injuries, offer shorter wait times, and typically cost less than ER visits. Some even accept appointments, helping you see a provider sooner.

What to Do If You Suffer from PTSD or Anxiety After a Car Accident in Maryland

Not all injuries are physical. Many drivers and passengers experience emotional distress after a collision. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares, or fear of driving.

A licensed therapist or psychologist can diagnose post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and provide coping strategies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). These records may be valuable for legal cases, as they show how the crash affected your mental well-being.

Mental health care should be treated as seriously as physical recovery. Ignoring these symptoms can prolong anxiety and impact your ability to return to normal daily routines.

When Should You Contact an Attorney?

Once your immediate medical needs are addressed, contact a Maryland personal injury attorney as soon as possible. Legal guidance helps you understand how to manage bills, insurance negotiations, and timelines for filing a claim.

Depending on your case, an attorney can gather evidence such as police reports, medical documentation, and witness statements to strengthen your case. This support helps ensure you don’t miss critical deadlines under Maryland’s statute of limitations.
