Steps to Take Immediately After a Car Accident in Maryland

In the aftermath of a car accident, it is crucial to remain calm and take decisive actions to ensure your safety and protect your legal rights.

The following is a step-by-step guide outlining the necessary steps to take at the scene of an accident in Maryland.

  1. Call 911: Contact the police as soon as the accident happens.
  2. Document the scene: Take thorough photos of the scene including:
    • Photos of your vehicle and all other vehicles involved.
    • Photos of the location of the vehicles to show exactly where the cars landed after the accident.
    • Photos of all license plates, insurance cards and driver’s licenses for all parties involved.
    • Photo of the other driver/s at the scene.
    • Provide Your Account of Accident: When the police arrive, ensure you provide your description of the accident. If there is a language barrier between you and officer, call a family member or friend to translate for you on speakerphone.
  3. Obtain Necessary Information: Obtain the police report number, officer’s information and exchange of information form if possible. Inquire if a full report will be completed.
  4. Towing Information: If your vehicle requires towing, obtain the name and contact information of the towing company and location where your vehicle will be stored for insurance purposes.
  5. Retrieve Personal Belongings: Remove personal belongings from vehicle before it is towed away (unless you are being transported by ambulance)
  6. Communicate with Emergency Responders: If you are being transported by ambulance, ensure the EMT provides the officer  with the location of where you will be transported, allowing them to follow up with you at the hospital for your statement.
  7. Secure Dash Cam: If you have a dash camera, ensure you retrieve it before the vehicle is towed.
  8. Stay Safe: If the other driver is hostile towards you in any way, wait in your car with the doors locked until the officer arrives.

By following these steps, you’ll not only ensure your safety and well-being but also gather essential evidence to support any potential insurance claims or legal proceedings following the accident. Always prioritize your safety and seek medical attention for any injuries sustained in a collision.
